The red grape Mazuela, also known as Cariñena, is widely distributed throughout the Iberian Peninsula. Its cultivation stands out in the Autonomous Community of Catalonia, where it is considered a recommended and/or preferred red grape variety in denominations of origin such as Empordà, Montsant, and Terra Alta.
A grape variety highly susceptible to powdery mildew (Uncinula necator), esca disease (Stereum hirsutum and Phellinus igniarius), and mites. It is a variety demanding in potassium and does not tolerate waterlogging or soil saturation well. It yields better productions in stony soils. It withstands droughts and wind very well, but in cooler areas, it does not ripen correctly.
It yields wines with high alcohol content and considerable color, but lacking in fruitiness and smoothness. Their aromas are bitter and herbaceous. They have high acidity. Due to their high tannin content, they age well, producing full-bodied wines.
