Airen is the most widely planted winegrape cultivar in Spain. It is cultivated in almost 30% of all Spanish vineyards. Most of Airen can be found in the Castilla La-Mancha region, specifically, in the DOs La Mancha and Valdepeñas.
Overall, Airen is very resistant to plagues and vine diseases. It is drought-resistant, and it is well adapted to poor and unfertile soils.
Airen winegrapes produce pale yellow white wines, with medium-intensity fruity aromas reminiscent of bananas and citric fruits. Airen wines are full-bodied and low in acidity, which makes this a neutral variety, mostly used for mixture wines.
