Macabeo

    • Geographical distribution
    • This variety is grown in Aragon, La Rioja, Castilla La-Mancha, Valencia and Extremadura, but its production in Catalonia stands out, where it is established as a preferred white variety in the DOs Empordá, Montsant and Terra Alta. In Extremadura Macabeo is common in the DO Ribera del Guadiana.


    • Agronomic features
    • It is very sensitive to the oïdium (Uncinula necator), botritys (Botrytis cinerea), mites and the ring rot (Xylophilus ampelinus), but a little less to the downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola). It is a variety affected by spring frosts and it should avoid both wet and fresh soils and very dry soils.

    • Date of budbreak: late
    • Date of maturity: medium-late


    • Oenological features
    • Macabeo wines are dry, with a pale- yellow color, slightly astringent taste and balanced acidity and sugar. It is often employed in the productions of cava in Catalonia together with Parellada and Xarelo varieties.
